The Local Lookout

~Church Rocks Trail~

This month’s Local Lookout features a fantastic trail that I use almost every day. Church Rocks. Located on the north side of Washington City in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, Church Rocks Trail is a place that hikers, bikers, runners and equestrians frequent.

Known for its crimson red slickrock, its views in all directions, and for not being too long, Church Rocks is a must do for everyone who enjoys the quintessential St George red rocks.

Trail from the park leading to the other side of the I-15. LOVE those flowers!

My favorite place to access this trail is from Highland Park, in Washington City, which leads you under the freeway in a drainage culvert. Some of you who are afraid of the dark may want to bring a flashlight! From the other side of the freeway, the trail leads you directly up onto the slickrock and makes a loop of about 2.5 miles. From the top of the slickrock section, you will be able to enjoy beautiful red rock outcroppings, a view of Zion and Pine Valley Mountain, and a view of the southern mountains.

Church Rocks can be done in a couple of hours or be a part of a multi-day trip as it interconnects with many other trails within the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. Guess which weekend will be PERFECT to give it a try? This one! The weather is supposed to be fantastic so whatever you do, make sure to get out and enjoy one of the many outdoor activities St George has to offer.  See this link for detailed directions and as always, please don’t hesitate to call or email me for more info. Have a great weekend!
